Capturing Precious Moments: Essential Products Every Dog Mom and Dog Photographer Needs

Updated: Sep 17, 2023

A lot of people think that having a dog just means getting a pet from a rescue or breeder. But some people, like you and me see the dog that we rescue or purchase from a breeder as so much more than just a pet, they are a family member. One thing very important with dogs and people is the bond that they share together. One thing I believe is caring well for the dog and making memories with them as well.

Must-Have Camera Gear

As a Dog Photographer I of course love capturing photos of my dogs! It is always been a passion of mine, but do not worry I will not just be sharing the fancy expensive equipment There are some that are for the busy dog mom with just her phone in her back pocket.

First, of course, I have to share my all-time favorite camera that I use and love, my Nikon D850! With super-fast AF, 7fps burst shooting, and a very deep buffer, the D850 is also a solid pick for any photographer capturing dogs, sports, and action subjects

Next, I love the 85mm for pairing with my Nikon 850. It has a beautiful balance of portraits and details, and the focal length is perfect for up close or even horizontal landscapes with my clients as well.

A tripod is always a must-have with dogs. This is amazing for capturing video, holding your phone as well.

This tripod that I always use for Social media filming reels, capturing behind the scenes in my photo sessions with clients or just capturing a nice photo of Vixey and me together, is always my go-to even with me having 3 other tripods to pick from, hahaha!

The Neewer Tripod is easy to use, compact, and can expand all the way to even doing Flat Lay photographs as well.

Now if you are looking for a cheaper version JoilCAN Tripod is just as compact and sturdy I would definitely use this one for photography and other creative moments as well.

Here is for all the Dog moms wanting some quick photography tools that you can use with the simple camera app on your phone, Here is the gear I would use:

JoilCAN Tripod- Compact, cheaper, small, and also can hold a large camera or phone

Vaster Phone Tripod holder, This is compact and fits right on the tripod piece. It is super cheap and fits most phones too!

Styling and Props

For a photoshoot the way I always do it, yes this is according to your style and the outcome you want. I always keep it simple and elegant. If you want props for the holidays getting a blanket, here is one love the pattern, and is perfect for fall weather and season. Getting a blanket may seem very simple and not that involved, but with a blanket, you can wrap yourself and your dog in a photo or lay it out on the ground and have your dog lay on it for some photos.

Second, I would get a small bucket or basket, If you have a smaller dog you can see if your dog fits inside but if you have a large dog like a Golden Retriever or a Great Dane, do not worry this prop works for you as well.

Small dogs; If your dog fits in place the dog comfortably inside and take a few vertical photos like that. It will give some variety in posing and also your dog is more app to be interested if you change up the location or props.

Large dogs; Place the bucket or basket next to the dog Now make sure you have some other props to put inside, it can be apples, tennis balls, books, and small item that calls to your style. Now once that is filled place it by the dog and have your dog interact with the items inside the bucket/basket. This will add a new interest to not only the photo but your dog as well.

Here are the two items I would get if you want a prop for some fun quick photos!

Grooming and Care Products

Now before you even think about doing photos of your dog you need to first have a nice groomed dog. Even if you take your dog to a groomer these tips and items are needed!

The shampoo that I use and really helps my dog stay clean and fresh is;

This shampoo is helpful in so many ways. It moisturizes her skin, nourishes her long coat, and helps keep her coat shiny as well.

The conditioner that I use is Tresemme conditioner this is just so her hair is less tangled and keeps her coat shiny as well.

Next, I use the grooming detangle spray. Vixey is not a big fan of grooming so I need this spray to help me not pull on any knots or problems. Detangle spray is not a must I just like to use it since my dog doesn't like grooming.

This detangle spray really helps get the job done, it smells amazing too.

Now onto brushes, I have tried several but the one that I really like is:

Chi Grooming brush gets deep into her fur and the hair is out of the brush in two seconds with the back button release. If you have a long-haired dog I would HIGHLY Recommend this brush.

The other one I sometimes will use, not very often but for a long-haired dog using a Furminator. I use it only once in a while but the other brushes just have more of a nice glide and smooth this to them. But I have heard from several of my clients with Huskies and shepherds that the Furminator gets through the double coat very well.

The other tool that I use on my own dogs and clients is the Grooming wipes. I always need a pack of these. From powder sessions, and wiping off faces to wiping paws off on a muddy day or when my dog steps in something. These wipes are so handy. Trust me it will help and change any outdoor time with your dog!

Productivity Tools and Software

I know the life of a busy dog mom you need things to keep your time organized so here are my tips.

One; Get a planner for yourself. This will help you know your schedule and your free time with your fur baby.

Here are some that are simple and nice to purchase:

Two; Get the app Unfold. This is a fantastic app for anyone looking to make a collage or create a post with the cute photos you got with your dog. It is so easy and gives you a lot of free templates to customize.

Third; while you working on your editing and twiking the photos you took of your dog from that photoshoot day a nice reward and fun thing my dog loves to do is to play. Getting your dog an interactive puzzle toy is perfect to give them rewards for their job. well done but also keep their mind sharp as well.

Four; Lightroom App. This app is free to get from the app store and it is so nice to get a full-access editing tool right on your phone. Those of you who are photographers can dapple into the app and adjust the temperature, white balance, exposure, details, vibrance, and all the tools. If you not editing savvy then get Lightroom Presets where all the work is done for you it edits your photo with the click of a button. I have a new Fall Preset collection launching September 30th, If you want to be the first to get it sign up for my newsletter today to get the news first! Check out my other Presets if you want to get some of your pup's photos edited today!

All these products are amazing quality and great to use with your dog. One thing I tell my clients and everyone wanting to photograph their dogs. Let your dog lead your session. If the dog is not into the pose or location, it will show all over their expression. That can really make or break your photo.

In conclusion, these recommended products are essential for every dog mom and aspiring dog mom photographer out there. By investing in a nice brush, you can ensure the health and comfort of your furry friend during your photoshoots and adventures together. The tripod and phone holder are a game changer for anyone wanting quick photos of you and your dog together.

Don't forget about the small prop you can take with you. A blanket looks good for any photo and adds some comfort for your dog during the session too! Last but not least, the interactive puzzle toys will keep your pup entertained and mentally stimulated while you work on perfecting your dog's photography skills.

Remember, being a dog mom is about cherishing the bond with your dog and capturing their unique personality through the camera. With these recommended products, you'll be well-equipped to create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
